Julie Das, aka, SayKing, is an emerging songwriter from Toronto Canada, and writer of one of the Xmas Factor: All Stars songs, “At Christmas”! After spending many years of encouraging children and youth to strive for their dreams through sport and recreation, she has decided to take her own advice and do the same.
Writing and music have always been her lifelong passions. As a child, she participated in school drama productions, learned the piano, and later the flute. She never thought that music could be a career and ultimately attended the University of Toronto to study her second love, Physiology and Exercise Science. Her love of music and writing never diminished and after many years, she decided to take a leap of faith and give her song writing a chance. She strongly believes that it is never too late to pursue a passion and says, “You never know what could happen when you try to realize a dream, but we all know what happens when you don’t. So I choose to live by example for my children”.
In the fall of 2015, she took her very first step in introducing herself to the world as a songwriter by submitting her song “At Christmas” to the Xmas Factor songwriting competition.
“I was so excited when I found out that I was a finalist and that my song was going to be performed in their annual show,” Julie told us. “It was a such a positive experience and was a validation that I was on my way as songwriter.”
I am so happy to have become involved with the Iris Theatre and believe whole-heartedly in the work that they do. The calibre of writing is truly amazing and I am honoured to have my work among the works of such talented artists.
What would the recording mean to you?
Being able to record my song on the Xmas Factor Christmas Album would be incredibly exciting for me. It is difficult to promote your work as a non-performing artist and a Christmas Album would be another way to share my art.
Which other All Stars song are you most excited to hear?
I’m really looking forward to “The Angel at the Top of the Tree” being performed. I love a good story and a song about a home-made tree decoration going through a self-confidence is something that anyone can relate to and it certainly has got my attention.
What’s your favourite thing about Christmas?
What I love most about Christmas is spending time with my family, and friends, watching our favourite Christmas movies and being surrounded by beautiful music, lights and decorations everywhere I go.
